In Memory of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner - Kirchner was recognized as one of the founders of German Expressionism and one of the most gifted members of Die Brücke. He was a prominent target for the enemies of modernism. Kirchner was intensely disturbed by the news of the Nazis attack on modern art and the ban of his work in Germany. Kirchner became stressed and the onset of illness led him to destroy all of his woodcuts, some of his sculpture and burned many of his other works. In 1937, Kirchner was dismissed from the Preussischer Akademie der Kunste (Prussian Academy of Art) in Berlin and 639 of his works were confiscated and included in the Entartete Kunst (degenerate art) exhibition in 1937-1938. Kirchner moved to Frauenkirch, Switzerland and on June 15, 1938, he took his own life because of all the horrifying events of his time.
